WASHINGTON, D.C. (Mar. 22, 2000) The George Washington men's crews will race Georgetown Sunday, May 7, on the Potomac River in the latest match-up of the two crosstown rivals. The event replaces what had been known as the DC Area Championships between the schools.
The varsity crews will go head-to-head in a best-of-seven series of 1,000-meter sprints beginning at Key Bridge and finishing at Washington Harbour. The novice crews will race in a best-of-five series over the same distance.
I expect a series of shorter races to be more spectator-friendly, said GW men's crew coach Gene Kininmonth. Hopefully, it will become the highlight of our Spring racing calendar.
The shorter 1,000-meter coursehalf the distance of a typical raceputs a premium on strength and power. Strategy goes out the door, said Kininmonth. It is an all-out sprint and win or lose, you turn around and do it again.
Last year at the DC Area Championships, the GW men's varsity 8 placed second, 10 seconds behind Georgetown.
