WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 27, 2000) - Senior Alvaro Fortuny (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Colegio Interamericano) has begun to establish himself on the national level with his performance at the Nike Cup 10 days ago.
Fortuny, swimming against competition from some of the top-ranked teams in the country, swam the third fastest 100-yd breaststroke time in the country this season. Fortuny set the school record with a time of :55.44, which puts him behind only Brendan Hansen of Texas (:55.33) and Tamas Bessenyei of Purdue (:55.38). Fortuny also swam the 15th fastest 200-yd breaststroke time in the country, 2:03.33, at the Nike Cup.
Fortuny, a member of the Guatemalan Olympic Team at the 2000 Summer Games, has dominated the breaststroke event in conference meets so far this season. The Nike Cup gave the senior an opportunity to show why he was an Olympian and he put on one of the best performances of his GW career.
Fortuny will try to repeat his performance at this weekend's George Mason Invitational, as GW completes the first half of their schedule on December 1 and 2.
