Rowing Squads Race the Elite at Head of the Charles
10/25/2000 12:00:00 AM | Crew
"The Charles is also particularly exciting because it is a narrow river with six bridges, which make for anxious moments as three crews try to fit through arches in bridges which are only wide enough for two crews," said GW head coach Steve Peterson.
"This race also allows college crews to compete against the best in the world. College crews from all over the country including the US National team, along with national team crews from other countries like Germany, Great Britain, and Holland, travel to Boston to compete in the Head."
"As for the performance of my crew (the varsity women's 8), I was a little disappointed. I know the crew is much faster than we showed this weekend. We beat Navy several weeks ago here at the Head of the Potomac by six seconds. If we repeated that performance we would have finished among the top 20 crews in the country. That would have set us up well in the pre-season polls next spring. I am not disappointed in the athletes' efforts, they individually pushed themselves unbelievably hard. They just didn't work together, which is what our sport is all about."
"They just weren't executing well. We have been having fantastic practices, and I expected big things from them. I think all the excitement surrounding the regatta may have distracted them, and affected their performance. We do have another chance to do well this week as we travel to Princeton for the Princeton Chase."
The Princeton Chase takes place Sunday, Oct. 29, at Princeton, NJ.
