WASHINGTON, D.C. (Apr. 10, 1999) -- The U.S. Naval Academy crews took six first-place finishes, five seconds, and four third-place finishes to capture the Gilbert H. Hood, Jr. Point Trophy at the 12th Annual George Washington Invitational Crew Classic Saturday on the Potomac River.
Navy amassed 117 team points, 36 more than second-place Georgetown en route to the team point title. The Hoyas edged Virginia (80 points) by one point in the battle for second place.
Temple won the men's varsity eight race completing the 2,000-meter course in 5:40.94 - just one second ahead of runner-up Navy but nearly 32 seconds slower than last year's winning time. The Owls took home the Oliver T. Carr Bowl awarded to the fastest men's heavyweight eight shell.
Virginia won the Women's Varsity Eight Bowl for the fifth straight year by virtue of its first-place finish in that event with a time of 6:23.29, 10 seconds ahead of Navy but 42 seconds slower than its winning time in last year's Classic.
