GW Captures Third Place at A-10 Championships

WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 21, 1999) -- The George Washington University men and women's swimming and diving teams set 17 school records and seven Atlantic 10 records as both teams finished third at the Conference Championships held in Buffalo, NY over the weekend.
The men were led by junior Tim Champney (Seminole, Fl/Cypress Lake) who captured the 100 yd. and 200 yd. backstrokes. Champney's 100 yd. back time of 48.40 set a new school record and Atlantic 10 record by breaking his own record set last year. His 200 yd. back time of 1:47.09 also broke his existing school and Atlantic 10 record. Champney finished second in the 50 yd. freestyle (20.66) and set a new school record in the 200 yd. freestyle (1:39.52) as the lead-off on the men's 800 yd. freestyle relay. Champney received the A-10 Most Outstanding Performer award for his efforts.
Junior Juan Bocanegra (Miami, FL/Gulliver Prep) won the 200 yd. individual medley by breaking his own A-10 record and setting a new school record. Bocanegra also won the 100 yd. fly with a new school record of 49.34. Senior Rich de Wet (Johannesburg, South Africa) broke a 17-year-old A-10 record and a new school record by capturing the 50 yd. freestyle with a 20.42. He also finished second in the 100 yd. fly with a time of 50.04. Freshman Alvaro Fortuny (Guatemala City, Guatemala) won the 100 yd. breaststroke with a 56.28.
The men also captured the 200 yd. freestyle relay (1:22.01 - new school record), 200 yd. medley relay (1:31.44 - Atlantic 10 record, school record), 800 yd. freestyle relay (6:43.58 - school record) and the 400 yd. freestyle relay (3:01.74 - new school record).
Freshman Suzanne Grega (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) led the women by winning the 100 yd. backstroke with a new school record and A-10 record time of 57.61. Freshman Jocelyn Finch (Olympia, WA/Olympia) set school records in the 200 yd. IM and the 400 yd. IM. Finch finished seventh in the 200 yd. IM with a 2:07.69 and seventh in the 400 yd. IM with a 4:30.04. Junior Jennifer Skinner (Liberty, MO/Liberty) finished second in the 500 yd. free with a time of 5:00.29. Senior Kristen Janeczek (Long Branch, NJ/Red Bank) placed third in the 200 yd. freestyle (1:52.56), while senior Robin Bolstad (Lexington, NC/Forsyth) finshed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.27) and freshman Nell Friar (Oak Ridge, TN/Oak Ridge) finished third in the event (1:05.72). Freshman Stephanie Huff (Waterloo, IA/Cor Jesu Academy) placed third in the 200 yd. backstroke with a new school record time of 2:05.37.
The Colonial women also captured the 200 yd. medley relay with a new school record and an A-10 record with a time of 1:45.93. They also finished second in the 400 yd. medley relay (3:53.11 - new school record) and second in the 200 yd. freestyle relay (1;35.94 - new school record).
Sophomore diver Jeremy Hoders (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) finished third on the one meter board with a score of 415.15 and placed fifth on the three-meter board with a score of 417.40. Sophomore diver Lynn McCormick (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) finished fourth on the three-meter board (378.60) and eighth on the one-meter board (296.60).
The following swimmers were also named to the A-10 All-Conference Teams: Bocanegra, senior Jason Serino (Boston, MA/Boston Latin School), de Wet, Champney, senior Joe Corallo (Syosset, NY/St. Anthony's) and sophomore Wes Teter (Farmer's Branch, TX/RL Turner) for the men. Grega, Bolstad, senior Dena Hoffman (Westminster, CO/Pomona) and sophomore Brandyn Roark (Silverdale, WA/Central Kitsap) represent the women.
