Over the years, GW rowers have raced successfully at all levels. Annually, the racing schedule includes many of the top rowing programs on the east coast. Colonial crews have won medals at the IRA, Champion International, Atlantic 10 and Dad Vail regattas, as well as, the San Diego Crew Classic. Crews representing GW also have traveled to Europe and Japan where they have raced at the English Henley and against other international crews.
Many recent graduates have continued on with their rowing careers after college. Michelle Knox-Zaloom 86, is a member of the George Washington University Athletic Hall of Fame for her success as a member of the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Rowing teams. Tina Brown 90 also was a member of the 1992 Olympic team which competed in Seoul. Other GW alumni who have gone on to national teams are Rob Bartlett 87, as a member of the British National Team, and Molly Hoyle 89 who rowed for the US at the 1989 World Championships. Shannon Hapgood 98, spent the summer of 97 in San Diego rowing for the National Team coach Hartmut Buschbacher. Her hard work and dedication earned her a berth in the US Quadruple Scull crew which competed in the 1997 Nations Cup in Milan, Italy. Sarah Bergeron 94 found success in another water sport as part of the crew' of the America3 in the 1994 America's Cup regatta.
More recently, Linda Miller 94, and Aquil Abdullah 95, were members of the 1997, 1998 and 1999 US National teams. Miller, who was a member of the US Women's Eight which finished sixth in the world in 1997, and a bronze medalist in the women's pair at the 1998 Worlds, was two seat in the US Women's Eight which won a silver medal last summer at the 1999 World Championships. Aquil has gained prominence as a sculler capturing the 1999 US National Championship title in the heavyweight men's single scull. He also represented the US in the heavyweight single at the 1999 Pan American Games where he won the silver medal.
Many of the members of this year's men's and women's crews are participating in the national team testing and will spend their summer rowing at development and pre-elite rowing camps.
