Mike Brey '82, a former student-athlete who competed in men's basketball, was inducted for the success he achieved beyond GW. One of the most successful college basketball coaches in the country over the past two decades, Brey finished his collegiate playing career as a Colonial in 1982. He led GW with 116 assists in 24 games en route to team MVP honors during the 1981-82 campaign before earning his bachelor's degree in physical education. His coaching career over three decades included time spent under Hall of Fame mentors like Morgan Wootten and Mike Krzyzewski before he became a decorated head coach himself. The Big East Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2011, a year in which he led Notre Dame to 27 victories and was chosen National Coach of the Year by the AP, Sports Illustrated and CBSSports.com, Brey has 13 20-win seasons to his credit and 11 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Brey was honored in a special ceremony on January 14, 2014 at the Charles E. Smith Center when GW men's basketball hosted VCU.
