WASHINGTON - GW golf head coach Chuck Scheinost announced on Thursday the addition of transfer Philippe Thorin to the program for the 2024-25 season.
"I'm very excited to have Philippe join our program in the fall," Scheinost said. "He is a tremendous player who has achieved a high-level of success as the top junior in Ecuador. Unfortunately, he was forced to the sidelines for a big chunk of his early college experience with an injury. He's now healthy and hungrier than ever to show everyone what he is capable of."
Thorin comes to George Washington after two years at North Texas. He played in two tournaments for the Mean Green as a freshman in 2022-23 with a 78.83 scoring average before not competing last season due to an injury.
The native of Quito, Ecuador came to the U.S. with a prestigious pedigree, ranking as the top U18 and amateur golfer in Ecuador from 2018-2020. He has competed in the last three Latin American Amateur Championships and represented Ecuador in the 2022 World Amateur Team Championship.
Thorin won the Sudamericano Juvenil for Ecuador as a team in 2021, the country's first championship in the tournament, and finished second as an individual in what is considered the top junior tournament in South America. He also has appeared in a Korn Ferry tour event (Astara Championship), PGA LAT Event (Quito Open) and the PGA LAT Final Developmental series in Lima, Peru.
