Buff and Blue open meet with a pair of top-ten swims
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - GW swimming and diving wrapped up the first day of the Cavalier Invite, led by top-ten program swims from Moriah Freitas and Matthew Whelan. The Buff and Blue return for day two of the Cavalier Invite tomorrow with prelims beginning at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m., and all of the action can be followed live on the Meet Mobile app.Â
Freitas, a sophomore from Orlando, Fla., made history during Friday's time trials, capturing the second-fastest (1:59.79) 200-yard butterfly in program history. Freitas jumped from fourth to second on the all-time list and also owns the fourth-fastest 100-yard butterfly time in program history.
Whelan also stamped his name on the program's top-ten list during the 200-yard butterfly time trials. A graduate student from Richmond, Va., Whelan's time (1:45.75) was good for third in GW history.Â
Stine Omdahl Petersen rounded out GW's day-one time trials with a fast swim of her own. Petersen recorded a 2:17.49 in the 200-yard breaststroke time trials. It's a time that would have been good for fifth in GW history, had she not already owned the Buff and Blue record (2:12.90) in the event.
Outside of time trials, Tyler Kawakami paced the Buff and Blue, finishing third (20.55) in the 50-yard freestyle final. He was followed by Jason Hawkins in sixth (21.07) and AJ Wood in eighth (21.18).Â
