Buff and Blue open home slate on Sunday
WASHINGTON – The George Washington gymnastics team is set to open its 2022 season when it welcomes William & Mary, Penn and Cornell to the Smith Center on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the annual Lindsey Ferris Invitational.
LINDSEY FERRIS: Lindsey Ferris was a four-year performer on the gymnastics team and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in communication in 2001 before serving as a Presidential Administrative Fellow (PAF) while earning her masters in forensic science in 2003. Following graduation, she achieved great success by becoming a Special Agent for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations before her untimely passing.
LEADING OFF: Senior co-captains Deja Chambliss and Olivia Zona will lead a squad that features nine additional returnees, including sophomore Kendall Whitman, who earned All-EAGL recognition last season. Whitman received the second-team nod with her 9.825 qualifying vault score. Whitman was named EAGL Rookie of the Week twice in 2021, and posted a 9.950 on floor in her GW debut to equal the program record. Chambliss returns after a junior campaign that featured a trip to NCAA Regionals on vault. The Chesterfield, Va., native tied for second overall on the event at EAGL Championships and had a career-day at Temple on March 5, tying her career-high 9.900 on vault and setting a new personal best with a 9.850 on bars.
NEW FACES: GW welcomed seven new gymnasts to the program this offseason, including six first-years and one transfer. Rachel Katz, Sarah Zois, Gabby Lopez, Madi McMullen, Madison Steskal and Marlee York join the program for their first season in 2022. In addition, junior Libby Garfoot will make her GW debut on Sunday after competing for two seasons at Penn.
A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE: Margie Foster-Cunningham begins her 38th year at George Washington and her 37th season at the helm of the program in 2021-22. As the longest-tenured head coach at GW, Foster-Cunningham leads GW into its 18th season as a member of EAGL. She is assisted by former GW gymnasts Stephanie Stoicovy Worrell (7th season) and Chelsea Raineri (4th season).
